How To Write

Ok, so this isn't really a blog about how to write.... but I am going to blog about my journey writing my first novel.

So, i've been having a heck of a time getting started. I've done a lot of research. I have a concept. I even wrote a couple of pages. But, now i'm stuck. So, I picked up a couple of things to help me get started. The first is called the "Snowflake Method". The Snowflake Method is an approach to writing that follows an engineering approach in which you start off with a very high level design and iteratively refine and add more details. In my day job I am a computer programmer and I've actually heard of the Snowflake Method before. The "Snowflake Guy" is Randy Ingermanson himself a software developer turned novelist. What a coincidence! Randy runs a superb blog and e-zine over at http://www.advancedfictionwriting.com and Randy also wrote a nice piece of software that helps a writer do the Snowflake Method.

Randy turned me on to another author, Larry Brooks, who wrote a book called "Story Engineering". Ok, if you couldn't tell, I'm a bit of a nerd. Anyway, i'm working my way through Larry Brooks' book and decided that I would blog through my experiences writing this novel. One of the maxims for writing is to just write so this will help fulfill that purpose and hopefully inspire me to actually write my book too.
